Carmelo Anthony Trade Rumors Shift To West Coast, Lakers

Carmelo Anthony Trade Rumors Shift To West Coast, Lakers

A surprising new team has reportedly entered the fold in the Carmelo Anthony sweepstakes.

ESPN's Chris Broussard reported on Tuesday that the Denver Nuggets have had discussions with the Los Angeles Lakers about a trade that would involve center Andrew Bynum and likely more players.

Broussard says that the proposed deal with LA , as it stands now, would not necessarily require a third team. A straight-up-deal involving Anthony and Bynum would technically work financially under the NBA's current collective bargaining agreement, but the Nuggets would likely also ask for expiring contracts from the Lakers in exchange for more players.

Yesterday, Broussard broke news about discussions between the Nuggets, the Minnesota Timberwolves and the New York Knicks--who have long been considered favorites to land Anthony--about a deal that would send Anthony to New York.

Today, Broussard says the deal is still alive, but has been complicated by concerns over the Knicks forward Wilson Chandler, who would be a key part of that deal.

Anthony has been the subject of trade rumors since he declined to sign a 3-year, $65 million extension with the Nuggets last summer.

Last month, Lakers star Kobe Bryant called Nuggets fans "Idiots" for booing Anthony.

Patriot Act Extensions Rejected By House In Bipartisan Vote

Patriot Act Extensions Rejected By House In Bipartisan Vote

The House on Tuesday failed to extend the life of three surveillance tools that are key to the nation's post-Sept. 11 anti-terror law, a slipup for the new Republican leadership that miscalculated the level of opposition.

The House voted 277-148 to keep the three provisions of the USA Patriot Act on the books until Dec. 8. But Republicans brought up the bill under a special expedited procedure requiring a two-thirds majority, and the vote was seven short of reaching that level.

The Republicans, who took over the House last month, lost 26 of their own members, adding to the 122 Democrats who voted against it. Supporters say the three measures are vital to preventing another terrorist attack, but critics say they infringe on civil liberties. They appealed to the antipathy that newer and more conservative Republicans hold for big government invasions of individual privacy.

Earlier on Tuesday, Republicans also pulled a bill from the floor because of dissatisfaction about extending trade benefits for three South American countries while continuing a program that helps retrain Americans who lose their jobs to foreign competition.

The Patriot Act bill would have renewed the authority for court-approved roving wiretaps that permit surveillance on multiple phones. Also addressed was Section 215, the so-called library records provision that gives the FBI court-approved access to "any tangible thing" relevant to a terrorism investigation.

The third deals with the "lone-wolf" provision of a 2004 anti-terror law that permits secret intelligence surveillance of non-U.S. people not known to be affiliated with a specific terrorist organization.

Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., the former Judiciary Committee chairman who authored the 2001 Patriot Act, urged his colleagues to support the extensions, saying they were needed as a stopgap until permanent statutes could be agreed upon.

"The terrorist threat has not subsided and will not expire, and neither should our national security laws," he said.

But Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, said Republican supporters of the tea party movement should show their opposition to big government by joining Democrats in opposing the measure.

WASHINGTON — The House on Tuesday failed to extend the life of three surveillance tools that are key to the nation's post-Sept. 11 anti-terror law, a slipup for the new Republican leadership that miscalculated the level of opposition.

"How about the Patriot Act, which has the broadest reach and the deepest reach of government to our daily lives?" he asked.

The defeat means that Republicans may have to bring the bill back to the floor under regular procedures that only require a majority for passage but allow for amendments. Time is of the essence: The three provisions will expire on Feb. 28 if the House and Senate can't agree on how to proceed.

The House had pushed for a nine-month extension to give lawmakers more time to come up with an approach that would give the measures permanent legal status. The Senate is considering longer-range ideas.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., last month introduced legislation that would extend the three provisions through 2013 while improving oversight of intelligence-gathering tools. Leahy would also phase out, at the end of 2013, the use of national security letters, FBI demands for information that do not need a judge's approval.

The Senate also has on its legislative calendar a bill by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., that would reauthorize the three measures through 2013 and a Republican proposal that would make them permanent.

The White House, in a statement, said it did not object to the House bill but "would strongly prefer" extending the provisions to the end of 2013, saying that "provides the necessary certainty and predictability that our nation's intelligence and law enforcement agencies require."

Leahy, who introduced a nearly identical bill last year that the Senate did not take up, said in December that he had received a letter from Attorney General Eric Holder saying that the Justice Department was implementing several oversight and civil liberties measures included in his legislation.

Those included requirements that the government show relevance to an authorized investigation when seeking library or bookseller records, and similarly that the FBI show that information it is seeking with a national security letter is relevant to an investigation.

Michelle Richardson, legislative counsel of the American Civil Liberties Union, said she was "glad to see there is bipartisan opposition to the Patriot Act 10 years later." The ACLU is a strong opponent of the three provisions, saying they lack proper and fundamental privacy safeguards.

Proactive can appeal over £4.3m Wayne Rooney claim

Proactive can appeal over £4.3m Wayne Rooney claim

Sports management firm Proactive has won permission to appeal over a £4.3m claim against Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

The firm failed in its bid to sue Rooney in July 2010 for what it claimed was unpaid commission on deals agreed when the player was at Everton.

It was ruled that a contract between Proactive and Rooney for him to pay 20% commission on deals was unenforceable.

Permission for Proactive to appeal was given at the High Court in London.

Judge Brendan Hegarty ruled in 2010 at Manchester Mercantile Court that the eight-year contract Rooney signed as a young Everton player was "an unreasonable restraint" of his trade, when the Football Association recommended a maximum of two years.

After that hearing Rooney said he was "delighted", and that the firm had tried to "exploit him" by demanding vast sums.

Giving permission for the appeal earlier, Lord Justice Ward said Proactive did have a prospect of success in its arguments over Rooney's contract.

He said: "The mere fact that this was a claim for millions of pounds is almost in itself a compelling reason to give permission to appeal."

Proactive's founder Paul Stretford, took Rooney with him in October 2008 when he left the firm, citing "huge and irreconcilable differences".

AOL to buy Huffington Post in $315m media merger

AOL to buy Huffington Post in $315m media merger

US internet firm AOL has agreed to a buyout of the Huffington Post online newspaper.

The $315m (£222m) deal will create an internet media group with 270 million users, including 117 million in the US.

The purchase price - $300m of which will be in cash - will be paid to co-founders Arianna Huffington and Kenneth Lerer and a few minority shareholders.

Ms Huffington - currently editor of her namesake news service - will head the combined firm's content division.

This means she will take on responsibility for AOL sites such as Engadget and Techcrunch, as well as retaining her current role at the intellectual centre-left website she helped set up in 2005.
Advertising

"The Huffington Post will continue on the same path we have been on for the last six years - though now at light speed - by combining with AOL," said Ms Huffington in a joint statement.

AOL expects the purchase to help boost its flagging advertising revenues in a year that chief executive Tim Armstrong maintains will mark a turnaround for the company that divorced from Time Warner in 2009.

The Huffington Post is expected to contribute an additional 25 million users to the internet giant.

"The combination of AOL's infrastructure and scale with the Huffington Post's pioneering approach to news and innovative community-building among a broad and sophisticated audience will mark a seminal moment in the evolution of digital journalism and online engagement," said the two companies in their statement.

The transaction is expected to be completed in March or April and will need regulatory approval in the US.

Super Bowl: Christina Aguilera fluffs national anthem

Super Bowl: Christina Aguilera fluffs national anthem

Christina Aguilera fluffed a line of the Star-Spangled banner as she belted out a version of the US national anthem to open Sunday's Super Bowl in Texas.

The singer, 30, should have sung: "O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?" but repeated an earlier line with a slight variation.

She sang: "What so proudly we watched at the twilight's last gleaming."

The anthem is one of the set piece events of the glittering Super Bowl pre-game ceremony.

Aguilera's mistake immediately set social networks abuzz with chatter. Her representative could not immediately be reached for comment.

Controversy

The NFL final - which was this year contested by the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers - is one of the most-watched programmes in US television.

Last year it drew a record 106.5 million viewers.

The half-time show of Super Bowl in 2004 created controversy when Justin Timberlake ripped a piece of Janet Jackson's top, resulting in a glimpse of her right breast.

The pair said the incident was accidental, calling it a "wardrobe malfunction", but broadcaster CBS TV was fined $550,000 (£351,000) after hundreds of complaints from viewers.

The fine was subsequently revoked in July 2008.

5 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Arianna Huffington

5 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Arianna Huffington

AOL’s recent acquisition of The Huffington Post took the Internet world by storm. The new editor-in-chief of the media conglomerate, Arianna Huffington, completely stole attention from the recently concluded Super Bowl XLV on many popular news websites and now, we here at TNW want to share some interesting facts about the woman behind it all.

1. Arianna Stassinopoulos was born in Athens, Greece in a family of four with one sister. At sixteen, she moved to England to attend Girton College at Cambridge University where she got an M.A. degree in Economics. In 1971, she became the President of the Cambridge Union Society, a highly-recognized debating society. She is now a naturalized US citizen.

2. She met oil millionaire Michael Huffington, a family friend of the Bushes, at a 1985 party hosted by Anne Getty in San Francisco. They got married one year later at a wedding party paid for by Getty.  In 1997, the couple got divorced after 11 years of marriage, and in 1998 Michael Huffington revealed that he was bisexual.

3. In 1981, she wrote a biography of Maria Callas, Maria Callas — The Woman Behind the Legend, and in 1989, a biography of Pablo Picasso, Picasso: Creator and Destroyer. Both of these works were accused of plagiarism. One of them ended in a court settlement where Gerald Fitzgerald, Callas’ biographer, was paid “in the low five figures.”

4. Huffington was an independent candidate to recall California governor Gray Davis in the 2003 recall election. She described her candidacy against front-runner Arnold Schwarzenegger as “the hybrid versus the Hummer.” The two would continue to have a high-profile clash during the electoral debate, where both candidates were criticized for making personal attacks.

5. Huffington first hosted a website called Ariannaonline.com, which now redirects to The Huffington Post. Her first foray into the Internet was a website called Resignation.com, a rallying place for conservatives opposing Clinton. In 2005, she became the co-founder of The Huffington Post, one of the biggest news websites in the Internet today, with more than 3,000 contributing bloggers.

Christina Aguilera National Anthem Effort: FAIL!

Christina Aguilera National Anthem Effort: FAIL!

Poor Christina Aguilera.

The singer choked on the biggest stage of her career Sunday night, stepping to midfield prior to Super Bowl XLV and flubbing a lyric to the national anthem. Aguilera left out the words "O’er the ramparts we watched” and instead inserted “What so proudly we watched" in their place.

Watch the entire performance for yourself:

We really do feel bad for Christina, who has sung this iconic song in public on a number of occasions. Still, it was not the most embarrassing thing to happen to her this year.

UPDATE: Aguilera has released the following statement in response to the gaffe:

"I got so caught up in the moment of the song that I lost my place. I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through.”

Farrah Fawcett’s red swimsuit goes to Smithsonian

Farrah Fawcett’s red swimsuit goes to Smithsonian

The red swimsuit that helped make “Charlie’s Angels” actress Farrah Fawcett a 1970s icon became part of the Smithsonian’s collection Wednesday on what would have been her 64th birthday.

Fawcett’s longtime companion Ryan O’Neal presented the swimsuit and other items to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington. O’Neal said Fawcett, who died in 2009 after battling anal cancer for several years, always intended to give the suit to the museum.

“They asked her years ago for the bathing suit,” he said. “So it was always in her plan.”

Fawcett wore the bathing suit for a photo shoot shortly before her debut on Charlie’s Angels in 1976. The resulting poster sold millions of copies and became the best selling poster of all time, according to Smithsonian curator Dwight Bowers. Bowers compared the poster to World War II pinups of Betty Grable and Rita Hayworth, saying it became a symbol of the 1970s era.

Though fans know the bathing suit as red, it is actually a burnt orange color, possibly due to fading. Before it was donated to the museum, Fawcett framed it herself, and it was stored at a Los Angeles warehouse, O’Neal said.

Nels Van Patten, Fawcett’s friend and tennis coach who was with her during the bathing suit shoot, said Wednesday she did her own hair and makeup for the pictures and didn’t have a mirror. She also squeezed a lemon in her hair to get natural highlights, he said.

Also donated to the Smithsonian were Fawcett’s book of scripts for the first season of “Charlie’s Angels,” a 1977 Farrah Fawcett doll and a “Farrah’s Glamour Center” styling kit for creating her signature hairdo. The items will be part of the museum’s popular culture history collection and will go on display this summer.

Fawcett’s friends and family at the museum Wednesday for the donation included Fawcett’s son with O’Neal, Redmond O’Neal, and O’Neal’s daughter, Tatum O’Neal.

O’Neal, who became choked up during the ceremony, said later he feels Fawcett’s presence every day.

“I’m still having trouble with losing her,” he said.

She was born Feb. 2, 1947, in Corpus Christi, Texas.

News Corp launches daily newspaper for iPad

News Corp launches daily newspaper for iPad

News Corporation's Rupert Murdoch is extending his media empire once again - this time with a digital newspaper for the iPad called the Daily.

Mr Murdoch told an audience at the Guggenheim Museum in New York that he hoped it would be an "indispensable source of news" in the tablet era.

The Daily will cost 99 cents (60p) a week and will be sold exclusively via Apple's iTunes store.

News Corp has hired about 100 journalists to work on it.

The paper will initially only be available in the US.

The Daily will feature news articles, interactive graphics, HD videos and 360 degree photos designed to work with the iPad's touchscreen.

It will add Twitter feeds into some articles and offer personalised content.

"Our target audience is the 15 million Americans expected to own iPads in the next year," said Mr Murdoch.

"In the tablet-era there is room for a fresh and robust new voice. New times demand new journalism," he said.

He promised that the Daily would combine the best of contemporary technology with "shoe leather reporting, good editing and a sceptical eye".

According to Eddy Cue, Apple's vice president of internet services, 200m news apps have been downloaded and there are 9,000 different news apps to choose from. Revenue share It is believed that Apple will use the tie-up with News Corp to change the way it charges for subscriptions. It means that any publisher offering content via the iPad will have to use Apple's payment method, known as in-app purchase, which in turn means Apple will get a share of the revenue made from any subscriptions. "That is quite a big deal," said Adrian Drury, principal media analyst at research firm Ovum.

"The specific terms News Corp have negotiated are unknown, but every other publisher now faces paying 30% of their hard won application subscription revenue to Apple," he said. It follows a tightening of the rules around e-book readers, which will also now be required to offer customers the ability to purchase books from within the app as well as from other sources. News Corp's move onto the iPad reflects a wider industry appetite for selling device-specific exclusive content, Mr Drury said. What sets the Daily apart is the fact that it has its own editorial staff. "Others re-use content but the Daily has hired expensive US journalists and has its own editorial staff," he said. "Its parent has deep pockets, and this is going to buy it time to build an audience and refine its model," he added. Others who have already gone down the iPad route find it a difficult road, he said. "Anecdotal evidence [suggests] that such publications have strong download sales when they first come to market, but when it comes to subscriptions, getting people to repeat buy, it gets really tough." It also faces stiff competition from free apps such as Flipboard, which allows users to pick the websites they want to create a personalised magazine.

Paywalls Mr Murdoch has made no secret of his desire to get consumers paying for news on the web. The Wall Street Journal, The Times and The Sunday Times, all owned by Mr Murdoch, have introduced paywalls for their websites. The Times has since revealed that it has seen a 87% drop in online readership. In November, Virgin tycoon Sir Richard Branson launched his own iPad publication, called Project. Unlike the Daily, it is a monthly magazine dedicated to style and culture. It costs £1.79. Other paid-for newspaper apps for the iPad include Esquire, Glamour, GQ, the New Yorker, Vanity Fair and Wired.

The White Stripes Officially Call It Quits

The White Stripes Officially Call It Quits

The White Stripes have officially broken up. According to an announcement on their website, "The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health. It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way."

The statement also mentions that Jack White's Third Man Records label will continue to release unheard studio and live recordings from the band through their Vault subscription club; it also expresses Meg and Jack's wishes that "this decision isn't met with sorrow by their fans but that it is seen both as a positive move done out of respect for the art and music that the band has created," including the following words from the duo themselves: "The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful."

Anderson Cooper Attacked, Punched In The Head By Pro-Mubarak Mob In Egypt

Anderson Cooper and his crew were attacked by supporters of Hosni Mubarak in Cairo on Wednesday. CNN's Steve Brusk tweeted that Cooper was punched in the head ten times.

The incident came as pro-Mubarak supporters attacked protesters calling for the Egyptian president to step down. Speaking on "American Morning" after the attack, Cooper said that he and his crew had been trying to go to a neutral zone between the two groups.

"We never got that far," he said. "We were set upon by pro-Mubarak supporters punching us in the head." Cooper said that he and the crew tried to escape, but that the crowd only grew: "the crowd kept growing, kept throwing punches, kicks...suddenly a young man would look at you and punch you in the face."

Black Ops map pack release date, HITS Xbox Live on February 1st

Black Ops map pack release date, HITS Xbox Live on February 1st

Treyarch and Activision have today revealed details around the first pack of downloadable content for Call of Duty: Black Ops, called First Strike. News of this pack first broke in December, but today its 5 new maps – 4 for multiplayer and one for the zombie game mode – have been detailed in YouTube video form. The pack will hit Xbox Live on Feb. 1st for 1200 Microsoft Points. No word on a release date for PC and PS3.

First Strike’s maps bring some new features to getting owned by pre-pubescant FPS prodigies. Kowloon brings the rooftop battle of the single player campaign to multiplayer, with the addition of ziplines to your battles. Discovery is a craggy arctic research facility split in half by a chasm that looks to create some cool pinch points and bottlenecks. Berlin Wall is pretty self explanatory, and apparently a haven for snipers. Stadium will see a lot of close quarter combat in the mezzanines around a hockey rink. Finally, the zombie map Ascension is, well it’s the one map not shown in this clip.

I’m somewhat saddened to see these trends of high-priced maps and console exclusivity continue. But Xbox 360 are surely glad to be getting their thumbs on these maps first, and I know there are plenty of gamers out there who’d pay pretty much whatever Activision wants to charge.
